EF: Could you elaborate on what is the role plays in the market, and how does your operations in Costa Rica fit into your operations?
TB: Accudyn is a contract manufacturing company that focuses on plastic conversion and injection molding. We view the production of plastic parts as merely the final step in offering clients a comprehensive solution. We will collaborate with the clients from the very beginning of their process, helping them with everything from support throughout design iterations to material selection tools, dye development, and assembly development. With the ultimate result being either an injection-molded plastic component or an assembly or subassembly to fit into the final product that they will sell to their consumers, we offer them a comprehensive custom solution for whatever manufacturing needs they may have.
Costa Rica is the newest addition to our direct manufacturing. We currently offer a suite of services in the United States and Mexico, in addition to outside partners worldwide, to support some of our initiatives.
EF: Why set up a production facility in Costa Rica, given the fact that you have operations in Mexico and the US already?
TB: Accudyn has a small ownership group, which gives us a great deal of flexibility in making strategic decisions because they are extremely specific about where we want to take the company. Our ability to make quick decisions and be nimble as a private corporation is one of our main differentiators, which is why we established a manufacturing site in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica emerged as a leading choice when we began evaluating potential greenfield sites. We considered opportunities in the United States, Mexico, and across Latin America. With its established network of medical device organizations, Costa Rica presented itself as an ideal location for a manufacturing site, particularly as we transitioned our production toward MedTech and medical device manufacturing. The country’s large addressable market, combined with the supply chain framework, further reinforced its appeal. With the local robust infrastructure supporting new entrants, Costa Rica now offers an environment where businesses can thoroughly evaluate risks and opportunities. This has enabled us to leverage local resources, build meaningful connections, and deliver exceptional experiences for stakeholders throughout the country.
EF: How is Accudyn building trust and ensuring that the processes are in place in showcasing and selecting the partners and employees that you work with?
JC: This is truly a team effort. Our operations in Costa Rica have been shaped not only by our local team but also by the collaborative involvement of our U.S. and Mexican teams. Teamwork is a defining characteristic of our organization, with employees readily offering support and sharing expertise across borders. Our Costa Rican operations will closely align with those in the United States, tailored to local culture.
The technology Accudyn is introducing is both innovative and significant, offering a level of precision not currently available in the market. We recognize that raising industry standards requires ongoing training and education, and we are committed to consistently introducing new concepts and procedures.
We have already attracted considerable interest from qualified professionals who are drawn to our values and our forward-thinking approach in the plastics industry, even before the facility is operational. My role centers on the technical and construction aspects of the business, supported by a comprehensive growth strategy. People are at the core of our vision, and we are dedicated to creating a positive and rewarding work environment that drives meaningful change.
EF: Could you please elaborate on the significance of the MedTech industry to the organization overall?
TB: Our production will be split between non-Medtech and medical technology, yet one of the sectors propelling our organization's vertical expansion is medical technology. Although we did not begin as a company that specialized in Medtech, we have been steadily expanding into these fields over the past few years, and our investment in Costa Rica is speeding up this process. This entails implementing organizational adjustments in every one of our sites to accommodate the MedTech possibility, not only in Costa Rica but also in all of our other locations.
EF: What role do you think AI or innovative procedures will play in performance or KPI measurement in the future?
TB: The rapid evolution of data and technology in manufacturing presents significant opportunities for collaboration between manufacturing, IT, and data analysis teams. The emergence of AI technologies has enabled the analysis of massive data sets at unprecedented speeds.
For example, in an injection molding facility with 20 machines cycling every 10 to 20 seconds, each cycle can generate dozens of data points. While monitoring this data was once a manual process, new AI toolkits now allow for real-time analysis and immediate response to minor defects, reducing reliance on individual oversight.
Currently, we are evaluating static data sets to identify ways to improve efficiency and explore new perspectives. Integrating external data sources into a centralized database is opening up further possibilities for innovation and operational gains.
Adopting these capabilities in manufacturing can drive higher productivity, better product quality, and more informed decision-making. The key to maximizing these benefits lies in understanding and effectively utilizing the available toolkits.
EF: What are you most looking forward to at the factory opening?
JC: One of the most exciting aspects of opening the new factory is the opportunity to teach our employees the advanced processes involved in manufacturing plastic parts with our latest technology. Since our production and molding procedures are different from standard methods, we get to introduce our team to innovative concepts, such as using robots to carry products and employing precision molds. This not only enhances their skills but also allows them to focus on the machine’s operation and product quality, rather than repetitive tasks.
I look forward to seeing our team grow as they learn to operate this new technology and work together to produce high-quality parts that meet precise specifications. It’s truly rewarding to be able to provide a great service with our new technology, and I am confident that, with the right training and support, our employees will excel and help us deliver exceptional results.
EF: As Accudyn approaches its 30th anniversary, what would you like to celebrate?
TB: The end of this year is when our factory is expected to open, so that date is quickly approaching. Our goal is to establish our Costa Rican manufacturing facility as a center of excellence for the production of plastic components, capable of meeting the demands of the medical technology sector both domestically and internationally. Having the kind of platform that we have created in Costa Rica excites us.
We believe that we can contribute a great deal of unique value to the country and that we have a distinct value proposition in comparison to other organizations. When it comes to achieving our many strategic goals, which are all centered around looking out for our clients and employees, Costa Rica will be a tremendous asset to our entire company.
We are thrilled to be a part of the Costa Rican community and believe that our employee-first culture will help make a difference. Since we are a family-run business, our principles differ from those of many large corporations. We look forward to introducing that kind of culture into the community in conjunction with our organization.
